Abstract
Abstract in another language
The search for structural materials with high mechanical efficiency and reduced mass has driven the development of polymeric composites with controlled internal architectures. In this context, additive manufacturing enables the fabrication of internal structures with a high degree of geometric freedom, allowing architecture to be investigated as a design variable capable of modifying the mechanical response of the material. This study aimed to develop and characterize polymeric composites consisting of an epoxy resin matrix and architected internal structures produced by additive manufacturing, evaluating the influence of geometry and orientation on their mechanical behavior. Honeycomb and gyroid structures, produced from ABS and incorporated into the polymeric matrix in different configurations, were investigated. The mechanical behavior was evaluated through three-point bending tests, in accordance with ASTM D790, considering the maximum load and flexural modulus of elasticity. The results were compared between the unreinforced resin and the different systems containing architected structures, seeking to identify the influence of geometry and orientation on load transfer capacity. Statistical analysis of the results was also performed, considering measures of dispersion and analysis of variance, in order to assess the significance of the differences observed among the experimental groups. The analysis of the results showed that the introduction of architected structures did not necessarily lead to an increase in maximum strength compared with the resin matrix, demonstrating that the presence of reinforcement must be analyzed considering its interaction with the matrix and its geometric configuration. Among the structures evaluated, the gyroid architecture exhibited mechanical behavior distinct from that of the honeycomb structure, highlighting the influence of geometry on the composite response. The orientation of the structures also had a significant effect on mechanical performance. Therefore, this study demonstrates that internal architecture constitutes an important variable in the development of polymeric composites produced by additive manufacturing, contributing to the understanding of the relationship between geometric configuration, orientation, and mechanical behavior, while providing a basis for future applications of architected materials in structural components.
