Abstract

This research focuses on the practice of renewal to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, understood as a manifestation of faith and cultural tradition present in the Cariri region of Ceará, Brazil. Mostly carried out in the home, the renewal brings together family, neighbors, and friends in moments of prayer, reaffirmation of faith, and maintenance of social bonds. The study seeks to understand what information is present in this practice and how it is disseminated among participants, considering the renewal as a space for the circulation of popular knowledge. To this end, the following specific objectives were established: a) to analyze renewal as a cultural and religious practice in the context of the Cariri region of Ceará; b) to describe the constitutive elements of a renewal; c) to present the experience of a Renewal, based on a family experience. Regarding procedures, the research is characterized as qualitative, bibliographical, and field-based, grounded in authors who discuss popular religiosity, Northeastern culture, and traditional knowledge. This research addresses the renewal process as a cultural and religious practice, identifying its main constitutive elements such as the altar, prayers, symbols, and community participation, and analyzes the modes of information transmission, especially through orality and collective experience. The historical and religious context of Cariri, marked by the strong influence of Padre Cícero and the manifestations of popular Catholicism, significantly contributes to the consolidation of this practice. It is observed that the renewal process transcends the strictly religious field, also configuring itself as an intangible heritage that preserves local memories, identities, and traditions. It concludes that the information present in the renewal processes is transmitted mainly orally and experientially, reinforcing the continuity of this tradition across generations and highlighting its social, cultural, and informational relevance.
